- Reciting the Talbiyah and repeating it until the start of tawaf.
- Tawaf or circumambulating the Ka`bah seven times, starting and ending each circuit at the Black Stone.
- Praying two rak`ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim.
- Sa‘i between as-Safa and al-Marwah, seven laps, starting at as-Safa and ending at al-Marwah
- Shaving the head or cutting the hair for men, and cutting the hair for women.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Umrah
- Entering Ihram
Begin at the designated miqat by performing ghusl, which is recommended for both men and women, including those menstruating or in postnatal bleeding. Men should apply perfume before donning the ihram garments. Ihram is entered after an obligatory or voluntary prayer (except for menstruating women), followed by reciting the Talbiyah:
“Labbayk Allahumma Umratan…”
Continue reciting the Talbiyah until reaching Makkah.
- Entering Makkah and Al-Masjid Al-Haram
Perform ghusl before entering Makkah. Enter Al-Masjid Al-Haram with your right foot, reciting supplications for forgiveness and seeking Allah’s mercy.
- Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Ka‘bah)
- Stop reciting the Talbiyah and begin tawaf at the Black Stone, kissing it if possible, or pointing towards it while saying:
“Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.” - Circumambulate the Ka‘bah seven times, keeping it on your left. Touch only the Black Stone and Yemeni Corner.
- Men should walk briskly for the first three rounds and uncover their right shoulder (idtiba‘).
- Recite dhikr and supplications, including:
“Rabbana atina fi’l-dunya hasanah wa fi’l-akhirah hasanah wa qina ‘adhab al-nar.” - Ensure to circumambulate the entire Ka‘bah, including the Hijr, as it is part of the Ka‘bah.
- Pray two rak‘ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim or anywhere in the mosque.
- Sa’i (Walking Between Safa and Marwah)
- Begin at Safa, reciting:
“Verily! As-Safa and Al-Marwah are of the Symbols of Allah…” (Quran 2:158). - Face the qiblah, raise your hands, praise Allah, and recite:
“La ilaha ill-Allaah wahdahu la sharika lah…” three times, making supplications in between. - Walk to Marwah, running between the green markers if able.
- Repeat the supplications at Marwah.
- Complete seven rounds (Safa to Marwah is one, and back to Safa is another).
- Hair Trimming and Exiting Ihram
- Men should shave or trim their hair evenly, while women should cut a fingertip’s length from their hair.
- This completes Umrah, and all restrictions of ihram are lifted.
By following these steps, the you can perform your Umrah in accordance with the Sunnah, ensuring a spiritually fulfilling experience.

Is there a specific garment for ihram
There is no specific garment for ihram in the case of women; rather a woman may wear whatever she wants, except that she should not wear the niqaab or gloves. The niqaab is that which is worn over the face, in which there is a hole for the eyes; the gloves are that which is worn on the hands.
In the case of men, there is a specific garment for ihram, namely the izaar (lower garment or waist wrapper) and rida’ (upper garment). He should not wear a thobe or pants or headgear or burnoose or khufoof (leather slippers). End quote.

Things to Avoid in Ihram
While in the state of ihram, pilgrims must refrain from certain actions to maintain the sanctity of their pilgrimage. These prohibitions include:
- Shaving or Cutting Hair
- Pilgrims must not shave their heads or remove any body hair until completing ihram. (Quran 2:196)
- Using Perfume
- Perfume is forbidden on the body, clothes, food, or any other form. This includes perfuming a deceased muhrim (pilgrim in ihram).
- Sexual Relations and Affectionate Touch
- Intercourse and any form of intimate physical contact with desire are strictly prohibited. (Quran 2:197)
- Marriage and marriage proposals are also not allowed.
- Hunting
- Hunting animals is forbidden while in ihram. (Quran 5:95)
- Cutting trees is only prohibited within the sacred boundaries (Haram), not in places like Arafah.
- Clothing Restrictions for Men
- Men cannot wear tailored clothing such as shirts, trousers, hooded robes, turbans, or leather slippers.
- Exceptions: If no lower garment is available, trousers may be worn; if no sandals are found, leather slippers may be used.
- Clothing Restrictions for Women
- Women cannot wear the niqab or burqa’ (face veils).
- However, they must cover their faces when in the presence of non-mahram men, even if the covering touches their face.
By adhering to these restrictions, you ensure that you Umrah or Hajj remains valid and accepted in shaa Allah.
Allah knows best.
Expiation for Breaking Ihram Rules
If a pilgrim violates ihram restrictions due to forgetfulness, ignorance, or coercion, no expiation is required. This is based on Quranic verses that emphasize the absence of sin for unintentional mistakes (Quran 33:5, 5:95).
However, once a person remembers, learns, or is no longer forced, they must immediately stop the forbidden action. Examples include:
- Removing a head covering upon realizing the mistake.
- Washing off perfume if applied unknowingly.
Intentional violations may require specific expiations, such as offering a sacrificial animal. However, Allah’s mercy allows leniency for those who act unintentionally.
Allah knows best.
Women in Ihram and Face Coverings
In ihram, a woman must not wear anything tailored to fit her face, such as the niqab, burqa‘, or litham. This ruling is based on the hadith where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly forbade wearing niqab and gloves during ihram (Sahih al-Bukhari 1838).
However, if non-mahram men pass by, a woman should cover her face by letting down a cloth from her head over her face. This practice was followed by A’ishah (RA) and the female companions (Abu Dawud, classed as sahih by al-Albani).
Face Masks in Ihram
A face mask is similar to a niqab because it is tailored to fit the face, so it is also not allowed in ihram. However, if a woman wears it due to necessity (e.g., illness or foul smells), she must pay the fidyah (penalty).
Expiation (Fidyah) for Wearing a Prohibited Face Covering
If a woman wears a face covering due to necessity, she has three options for expiation:
- Fasting for three days.
- Feeding six poor people (each person receiving half a sa‘ of food).
- Sacrificing a sheep.
If covering the face without necessity, she must remove it immediately once she remembers or realizes the ruling.
Men and Face Masks in Ihram
Unlike women, men are allowed to wear a face mask in ihram, as covering the face is not prohibited for them.
Conclusion
- Women in ihram must not wear a niqab, burqa‘, litham, or face mask.
- They may cover their faces with a cloth when non-mahram men pass by.
- If wearing a face covering due to necessity, fidyah must be given.
- Men may wear face masks in ihram.
